Liberatory Leaarning Circles

Liberatory Learning Circles are intentional, co-created spaces where participants come together to learn, unlearn, and reimagine through the lens of liberation. Rooted in ancestral knowledge, community organizing traditions, and healing justice practices, these circles are designed to center equity, critical reflection, collective care, and transformative action.

Unlike traditional learning formats, Liberatory Learning Circles are non-hierarchical, relational, and reciprocal. Every voice holds value. Facilitators act as stewards rather than instructors, guiding participants through dialogue, storytelling, experiential exercises, and somatic practices that reveal internalized oppression, challenge dominant norms, and foster community-rooted strategies for change.

Core Elements:

  • Circle Practice: Participants sit in a circle formation to affirm wholeness, accountability, and mutual respect.

  • Liberatory Praxis: A cycle of reflection, disruption, healing, and reimagination that challenges systems of domination.

  • Cultural Grounding: Integrates ritual, movement, and cultural traditions as legitimate sources of knowledge.

  • Community Wisdom: Honors lived experience and collective intelligence as essential to learning and transformation.

  • Emergent Learning: Allows learning to unfold in response to group energy, questions, and needs.

Liberatory Learning Circles are especially powerful for:

  • Social design practitioners disrupting extractive design practices

  • Nonprofit leaders who want to align values with organizational culture

  • Community organizers looking to center care, repair, and accountability

  • Teams are ready to examine how power, race, and healing intersect in their work
